Garden landscaping yard map

This yard is a new work in progress. I moved into a new house in the Spring of '99 and began with the hardscape (concrete, pond, retaining walls, patios) and moved on to the plants. The following is a very rough map of the site. The area designations correspond to the plant list chart below it.

Garden landscape plant list

The following is a list of most of the plants found in the various areas of the landscape map.


Trees

Most of the trees planted are deciduous. They are 5-8 feet tall. Yard Map

Area 1

Area 1 is planted on the highest part of the property. It is a hillside planting with predominately native California plants. The color scheme is purple and yellow. Yard Map

Area 2

Area 2 slopes gently downhill and is situated between the lawn and a short fence. It is planted predominately with daylillies, dahlias and in the future, daffodils. Yard Map

Area 3 has the most detailed planting scheme. It is the most visible from the house. I call it the "woodland area" because it is partly shaded. There are two small retaining walls made of blue-green serpentine rock that hold the planting areas. Yard Map

Area 4

Area 4 is primarily between the upper patio and the back fence. It includes some planting around the pond. Yard Map

Area 5

Area 5 consists primarily of a "living fence." Instead of a wooden fence, I have chosen to use deciduous vines on horizontal wire. That way I can see the green grass of my neighbor's undeveloped yard in winter and the plants will fill out in summer to block the grass when it turns brown. Yard Map

Area 6

Area 6 is a small area of planting at the corner of the house. It doesn't have much but I still like it enough to list it. Yard Map
